Since 2025 the physical residence card (BRP) has been replaced, and your immigration status is held as an eVisa in your online UKVI account. After arrival there are a few practical steps: accessing your eVisa, getting a National Insurance number, registering with a GP and opening a bank account.
Steps after arrival
- UKVI account and eVisa: create the account, link your passport and use a share code to prove your right to work or rent.
- National Insurance: the number you need for work and tax; many visa holders receive it automatically, otherwise apply online.
- GP: the IHS gives you NHS access; register with a GP near your home.
- Bank account: with your passport, proof of address and eVisa; online banks are usually fastest.
- Renting: landlords must check your right to rent with a share code.
If you hold an expired BRP, you can use it for travel until 31 December 2026 at the latest; set up your UKVI account early.
