Non-lucrative residence (No Lucrativa) is for people who live in Spain without working and have income or savings of at least €2,400 a month (400% of the IPREM index). The digital nomad visa is for employees and freelancers who work from Spain for foreign employers or clients and earn about €2,849 a month (200% of the minimum wage).

  • Means for the whole permit period: €28,800 for the first year and twice that for a 2-year renewal
  • Comprehensive health insurance, usually private with no co-payments or waiting periods (consular practice)
  • Medical certificate and criminal record certificate
  • To renew: more than 183 days of actual residence a year and school-age children enrolled

Digital nomad requirements

  • A university degree or 3 years of relevant work experience
  • The employer or client company has operated for at least 1 year, and you have worked with it for at least 3 months
  • Written permission from the employer to work remotely from Spain

  • You can apply from inside Spain (after legal entry) or at a consulate

Tax

Digital nomad visa holders can use the Beckham regime: 24% tax on work income up to €600,000 for 6 tax years. Non-lucrative residence usually makes you a Spanish tax resident, taxed on worldwide income; plan your taxes before moving.

Steps

  1. Assess your funds or employment contract and choose the route
  2. Prepare statements, insurance and documents with sworn translations (traductor jurado)
  3. Apply at the Spanish consulate; the decision deadline is 1 month
  4. Enter Spain, register your address and give biometrics for the TIE card within 1 month
