Georgia is one of the simplest countries for foreigners to marry officially: registration at the Public Service Hall usually takes place on the same day, in 2 to 3 hours, and it is a common route for mixed couples (for example Iranian and European). But whether the marriage is valid in Iran depends on meeting Iranian legal conditions and registering it.
Documents required
- Both passports with a certified (notarised) Georgian translation
- For divorced or widowed applicants: a legalised divorce decree or death certificate
- Minimum age 18 (no exceptions)
Steps
- Certified translation and legalisation of documents
- Apply at the Public Service Hall and set a time (basic registration is free; a ceremony costs about GEL 150–250)
- Register the marriage and receive the marriage certificate
- Legalise the certificate at Georgia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Iranian embassy for use in Iran
Validity in Iran
- Iran is not party to the Apostille Convention; documents must go through consular legalisation.
- The marriage is not registered in Iran automatically and must be registered or re-performed through the Iranian embassy.
- An Iranian woman marrying a foreign man needs government permission, and a Muslim woman's marriage to a non-Muslim man is not recognised in Iran.
Divorce
A consensual divorce with no minor children and no property dispute is possible at the Public Service Hall (with a reflection period of about 1 month); otherwise through the courts.
