You apply for a Portuguese national visa (D7, D8, D2, work or study) at the Portuguese embassy or consulate in your country of nationality or in your country of legal residence. For Iranians that means the Portuguese embassy in Tehran (through the VFS centre) or, if you legally live elsewhere, the Portuguese embassy in that country; for example the embassy in Ankara for residents of Türkiye.

From Iran

  • Applications for the Portuguese embassy are filed through the VFS Global centre in Tehran.
  • The embassy was temporarily closed or limited several times in 2025 and 2026 because of the regional situation. Check the current status of the embassy and VFS, or ask us, before you plan.
  • If the visa is issued without an AIMA appointment, request one through AIMA's online form after arriving in Portugal.

From Türkiye

  • Turkish nationals and residents with a valid Turkish residence permit (with at least 3 months left) apply for national visas at the Portuguese embassy in Ankara.
  • National visas usually take at least about a month.
  • For Iranians living in Türkiye this is often more practical than Tehran; Imperial's Istanbul office prepares the file from start to submission.

From Georgia

  • Portugal has no embassy in Georgia; national visas for Georgian nationals and residents are handled by the Portuguese embassy in Ankara.
  • Georgian nationals need no visa for short stays of up to 90 days, but residence (D7, D8, etc.) requires a national visa.
  • Iranians with a valid Georgian residence permit can use the same route.

Tips for a clean application

  1. Prepare all foreign documents (marriage certificate, criminal record, proof of income) with certified translations and the required legalisation.
  2. Get your NIF and Portuguese bank account before the embassy appointment.
  3. Your lease or accommodation must be valid for your arrival date.
  4. Match your income figures to the current Portuguese minimum wage (€920 in 2026).
